Explorer John Newberry, a member of the Macomb Expedition in 1859, was the first to describe the incredible beauty of the Needles, in what is now Canyonlands National Park. Newberry describes, “long line of spires of white stone, standing on red bases, thousands in number, but so slender as to recall the most delicate carving in ivory or the fairy architecture of some Gothic cathedral.
