Whitehorse and Raiders football

by Leo Platero

Students throughout the San Juan School District returned to the classroom for another school year in the past week.

As in years past, there will be new faces in the faculty, adminstration and studentbody at the various schools.

New faces at Whitehorse High School include a new science teacher, Paul McCarl (with a degree from Brigham Young University) and Helen Lake of Blanding (who will take over as one of the Navajo teachers and will also teach at Bluff Elementary School.)

Linda Whitehead will be the new English teacher, Ray Nakai will teach history and Angie Seiter will teach Special Education. Seiter taught two years in Mesa, AZ and is a graduate from Arizona State University.

There will also be a new head football coach.  Head Custodian Franado Fonseca has agreed to be the head coach, along with veteran coach Ed Reynolds. Coach Fonseca played football in Texas and was the junior high football coach last year.

Last year’s head coach, Lance Knight, said, “Fonseca has a good knowledge of the football game and should have a good season.”

Lance Knight, while still teaching at Whitehorse, will be an assistant line coach at San Juan High School while helping Bronco Head Coach Monte Lee.

Last year, the Raiders had a record of 5-3 and won its homecoming game against Navajo Pine 32-0.

Returning veterans include quarterback Joshua John, receiver Josiah Begay, punter Jaron Martin, lineman Kenny Whitehair and punt returner Shawn Dickson. Looking at the early morning practice, there were just a few players but that will probably change after the school starts.

The Raiders will play their first game at Navajo  Pine in Navajo, NM on Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. The homecoming opponent this year is dangerous rival Monument Valley Cougars in October.
