Volleyball comes up threes

Everything’s coming up threes in the sports world of Monticello and Blanding this past week.  The Monticello Lady Bucks finished in third place at the 1A state volleyball tournament, after losing to Panguitch in the semifinals in three games.

The Lady Bucks fought hard in the annual tournament, besting first round opponent Duchesne, before dispatching Wayne in four games-one more than three-to qualify for the semifinals against defending champ Panguitch.

After dropping the first game to Piute in the third/fourth place game, the Lady Bucks came roaring back to grab the next three and the third place spot.

With a young team that sports only two players with significant varsity experience, look for the Lady Bucks to continue the strong play of the last five years, where they sport a seventh, fourth, third and second place finish.

The Lady Broncos also captured the third place spot, dropping the North Summit Braves in three games.  The Broncos ended up in the unfamiliar third/fourth game after losing to South Sevier for the third time this year in three games.  In the early rounds, the five time defending champions defeated Rowland Hall in four games and North Sevier in three.

Heather Meyer
Almost unnoticed during the recent volleyball season for San Juan, was the occasional entry into games of Heather Meyer, San Juan’s two time MVP whose season ended in July with a knee injury.

Meyer assisted with the coaching this season while recovering.   Coach Moon put Heather in to serve in recent matches.  Says Moon, “We just put her in when we can and after she serves she stands clear out of bounds so the risk of injury is not there.  We would hate to have that happen to her again.”  Meyer is hoping to be able to play some basketball this winter.

More Threes
All three local 1A teams placed in the state volleyball tournament.  After Monticello’s third place finish, Whitehorse was seventh and Monument Valley was eighth.  The first time all three have placed in one tournament?
