Two more trophies for track teams

The 2011 track season ended with a bang for San Juan and Monticello high schools on May 21 as the San Juan girls and the Monticello boys both capturing second place trophies.  Additionally, Monticello girls finished third and San Juan boys fifth. 
Buckaroo coach Jeff Hunt files this report: “The girls and boy track teams gave a valiant effort at the State Championships at Brigham Young University to come up just short of the elusive state titles.  In all, seven Buckaroos claimed individual and relay titles to give the boys team a second place finish, while the girls finished third. 
Freshman Arianna Reay accomplished something very rare at any level, winning four gold medals and claiming the title of 1A girls Most Valuable Athlete.  She started day one by out-jumping the competition by a foot and a half in the long jump, coming just 3 1/2 inches short of the state record at 16’ 9”. 
“On day two, Arianna won the 100m going away, anchored the 4x100m relay team of herself, her sister Miriam, Samara Wells and Kaitlin Clark to victory, and finished off the day by blasting the competition in the 200m. 
“Macee Nielson finished off her outstanding high school career by placing second in the 3200m, fourth in the 1600m and anchoring the Medley Relay team, consisting of Nielson, Miriam Reay, Samara Wells and Martha Beh, to second.  (I am sure the Utes will be thrilled they picked her up, good luck Macee!) 
“Kaitlin Clark grabbed a school record in the 100m hurdles, finishing 3rd and Saydee Musselman and Samara Wells medaled in the 400m and Javelin, respectively, by placing 5th.  The 4x400m relay team of Saydee Musselman, Loren Randal, Martha Beh and Swayzi Slade capped of a strong showing by the ladies, finishing 3rd.
“On the boys side, Devin Wright repeated as state champion in the javelin, while taking second in the 400m, third in the high jump and sixth in the long jump. 
“Dallin Duncan climbed the summit to the high hump title at 6’ 2”, and also finished third in the 300m hurdles, fourth in the 110m hurdles and ran the 400m leg of the third place medley relay team of Duncan, Justin Wright, Kendal Maughan and Montana Welch. 
“Jake Duncan claimed the 110m hurdle title, followed by fifth in the 300m hurdles and sixth in the javelin, while helping the 4x100m team of Duncan, Kendal Maughan, Brian Robinson, and Montana Welch to a close second. 
“The boys team was in the lead through most of the second day and had a 20-point lead with three events to go, however in those three events there was only one entry left as the boys helplessly watched their lead slip away to Duchesne. 
“It came down to the final event for the boys to secure second. They needed to score one point to hold off two-time defending champion Rich.  The 4x400m relay team of Kendal and Dillon Maughan, Brian Robinson and Rylan Goodwine was able to hold on to fifth place for four points and a second place finish overall. 
“An additional note, Devin’s 193’ 1” javelin throw at the Davis Meet on April 30 was good for not only a state record, but the outstanding male performance of the year.
“On behalf of Coaches Mindy Saunders and Curtis Welch, we would like to thank all the parents and fans that supported the track team this year. 
“It is not always fun or easy to drive four hours and sit in the rain, cold, wind and snow to watch your favorite athlete and we always appreciated having you there.  We also enjoyed the lunch at state, thanks Mrs. Wright. 
“As for the Buckaroos Seniors, Macee Nielson, Devin Wright, Dallin Duncan, Loren Randall, Kendal Maughan, Montana Welch, Miriam Reay, Nathan Fuller and Mara Wells have been the foundation of our team for the much of the past four years and we have really had a fun watching you grow and develop. 
“Thanks for being hard workers and leaders, you have taught us much and we will miss you as you go on to your next endeavor.  Remember life isn’t always about winning the race as much as the fact that you ran.”
The Bronco gals capped an amazing year in sports for San Juan girls by grabbing second place in 2A track behind always powerful North Summit.  The girls claimed the number two trophy over third place Parowan by one point. Parowan looked to overtake the San Juan girls for second when they came in first in the last event of the day, the 4x400 relay.  But when the Bronco 4x400 relay team of Katrina Ward, MacKenzie Ward, Kendra Parker, Kelli Meyer and Simone Shumway came in fourth, just ahead of Millard, the second place trophy was secured. 
The gals from Blanding captured second with depth, having just one first place finish, that being the 4x100 relay.  Sade Kyles, Delaney Nielson, Cortney Macdonald, Simone Shumway and Kelli Meyer all wear that crown.
The girls finished fifth in the medley relay, with Kyles, Nielson, MacKenzie Ward, Katie Hiatt, Talia Kyles and Simone Shumway. 
Hiatt finished her stellar high school career with a third place in the 3200, sixth in the 1600 and that fifth in the medley relay. 
Cortney Macdonald, in addition to the 4x100 crown, had a trifecta of sevenths in the 100 and 300 hurdles and the long jump. 
Simone Shumway placed fourth in the 100 m and fifth in the 200 along with relay medals in the 4x100, medley and 4x400. 
Sade Kyles played tag with Shumway in the dashes, placing fifth in the 100m and fourth in the 200m, plus the medley relay and the 100 relay. 
Kelli Meyer, part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays also grabbed a fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 800.  Samantha Giddings was sixth in the shot put.
For the boys, Ammon Mitchell was the only state champ, winning the 110 meter hurdles in impressive fashion.  Mitchell also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles, seventh in the long jump, and was on the fifth place 4x100 relay team. 
Seth Moses got mad and threw things around, good enough for second in the discus and fifth in the javelin.  Colby Redd leaped his way to a sixth in the long jump and was part of two placing relay teams. 
Taylor Francom ended his high achieving high school running career with two fourths, in the 1600 and medley relay, a fifth in the 4x400 relay and eighth in the 3200. 
Jade Grover was sixth in the 3200 and on a relay team.  Bronco relays teams finished fourth (medley of Redd, Ryan Lyman, Christian Sherrow, Grover, and Francom), and two fifths (4x100 of Redd, Mitchell, Talon Jack, Lyman, and Brett Laws; and 4x400 of Chase Chamberlain, Lyman, Francom, Sherrow, and Laws).
