Trust Fund bill to Governor

The fate of the Utah Navajo trust fund is on the desk of Governor Jon Huntsman.

The legislature approved two bills on March 3 that would sunset Utah’s management of the trust fund and create an interim plan until Congress sets up a permanent plan.

The trust fund uses 37.5 percent of royalties from oil and gas extraction from the Utah portion of the Navajo Reservation for improvement projects and scholarships.

In one bill, funds would be managed by the Navajo Revitalization Fund board, which includes a state appointee, two San Juan County commissioners and a chapter leader.
