Win and loss for Monticello boys

The Monticello High School boys basketball team went 1-1 on the weekend at the Bulldog Classic in Dove Creek.

After beating Dove Creek just ten days earlier 47-42, the Bucks lost the rematch to the Bulldogs in an overtime thriller, 46-44.

The Bucks trailed for most of the game but closed the gap in the fourth quarter, even taking a brief lead. 

After four quarters of play, a 41-41 tie sent the game to an overtime period, where Dove Creek outscored the Bucks 5-3.

Monticello was led by Landon Ewart, who scored 14 on the game. Easton Young had 13, while Boston Freestone added nine. Donavan Atwood and Tommy Sheeran each had three points, while JD McDonald added two.

Freestone also led the way for the Bucks on the boards while securing ten rebounds. Ewart and Atwood also had nine boards for the Bucks, while McDonald had five.

Young led the way distributing the ball with five assists. Atwood had two assists, while Sheeran and Freestone had one. 

Young also led the way with nine steals for the Buckaroos. Freestone had three blocks on the game.

In their Saturday matchup, the Bucks beat the Nucla Mustangs 65-27 in a game they controlled from the second quarter on.

Ewart once again led the way for the Bucks, scoring 19 points. Young had 16 and Freestone added 13. 

Atwood and Curtis Bunker each had five points, while Sheeran had four and Kaden Pehrson hit a triple. 

Freestone had a double-double on the game, securing ten rebounds, while Sheeran added nine for the Bucks and Atwood had seven. 

Young assisted on five baskets, while Freestone had four and Sheeran added two assists. McDonald had four steals on the game with Atwood and Freestone adding three.

Monticello played San Juan after the press deadline this week and are off until their home opener January 4 against Grand.
