Wilcox holds off competiton to capture victory at Senior Amateur

At the Hideout Golf Club, putting two good rounds together rarely happens. It’s a hard golf course.
The rare exception happened last weekend as Rob Wilcox captured the annual Hideout Senior Amateur Championship.
Wilcox had back-to-back rounds of 2-under-par 70 to win the title by six shots over St. George’s Mike Hacker and St. George’s Kerry Miller. Two under-par rounds will win almost every tournament at the Hideout.
The Blanding resident sewed up the title on the back nine on Saturday. He birdied the tenth hole, but then gave it right back with a bogey on 11.
The 12th started a magical run of five straight birdies for Wilcox. He closed the run with a birdie on the 18th when he knocked his 7-iron approach shot to within six inches.
“I started out the round with three bogeys and thought ‘here we go again,’” Wilcox said. “It was going to be one of those rounds, but then I strung a few pars together and then ended up birdieing seven of the last ten holes. It was fun, needless to say.”
Hacker and Miller could never get any momentum going. Miller followed up a first-round 72 with a 74 and Hacker, who has won the senior title before, had back-to-back rounds of 73.
Wilcox, whose best round ever at the Hideout is 67, said his 36-hole tournament scores are the best he’s ever had at the Hideout whether it was in the regular amateur or the senior amateur.
