Whitehorse, Monument Valley split Battle of Drum

The Whitehorse and Monument Valley girls and boys competed in the first Battle of the Drum contest on the basketball court this season in Montezuma Creek on January 27.
In the girls game the Cougars dominated their rivals in a 75-35 win. Navaeh Wilson scored a game-high 19 points to lead Monument Valley.
Alyah Blackwater got 16 and Shimequa Hudson scored 13 in the game. Shikeeya Hudson scored nine points, Precious Bedonie scored eight, Raemi Nez scored seven, and Chianne Bedonie scored three.
In the boys game Whitehorse took the drum away from the Cougars with an 88-74 win. The Raiders built an 18-11 lead after one quarter, extending it to 43-29 at halftime and 61-45 after three quarters.
D’Wayne Nakai led all scorers with 24 points for the Raiders. Teammate Lyric Phillips scored 21 while Kai Yazzie added 17. Kalin Tohonnie scored 12 points, Dominic Dance added seven, Kaleb Joe got four, and Camron Nakai scored three.
While the contest was the only one this past week for Whitehorse High School, Monument Valley hosted two other games.
The Cougar boys dropped a contest to Pinnacle on January 24 by a score of 63-50, and to Rock Point on January 25 by a score of 89-50.
The Cougar girls beat Pinnacle 68-23 on January 24. Mariah Begaye led scoring in the win with 14 points while Blackwater and Shimequa Hudson each scored 13 points.
Nez had eight while Wilson scored seven. Chianne Bedoni and Precious Bedonie each scored six points while Shikeeya Hudson scored one.
The Monument Valley girls also fell to the defending 1A Arizona state champions from Rock Point on January 25 by a score of 64-53.
Precious Bedonie led scoring with 19 points while Sikeeya Hudson had 12 and sister Shimequa Hudson scored seven.
Blackwater scored five while Nez and Chianne Bedoni each scored four points. Wilson and Begaye both finished the game with one point.
Both Monument Valley teams head to Price this Friday, February 3 to rematch Pinnacle. They’ll stay on the road to face Green River on Saturday, February 4.
The Whitehorse girls will also take a road trip this weekend. They play Bryce Valley in Tropic on Friday, then head to Escalante on Saturday. The Raider boys will take the week off before hosting Monticello on February 7.
