San Juan High wraps up track and field regular season
It was a very busy regular season finale for the 2024 San Juan High School track and field team at the Dino Tracks meet at Carbon High School in Price and the BYU Invitational this past Friday and Saturday, May 3-4.
The Bronco boys finished second at the Dino Tracks, scoring 67.5 points to come up just 4.5 points behind event champion Kanab. The girls finished in a tie for eighth place with Parowan, scoring 21 points. San Juan combined for 88.5 total points and a sixth-place finish. Numerous Bronco athletes had excellent performances at the event in a field of 34 schools and 658 athletes. Edward Lyman was impressive as always in the mid-to-long distances, scoring wins in the 800- and 1600-meter races. His time of 1:59.23 in the 800 is his best this season. Likewise, his 4:37.08 in the 1600 meter is also a season best.
The Broncos captured one more individual championship in Price when Keezie Flannery won the girls high jump, clearing five feet, one inch. Brigham Nielson had a banner day, taking second in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.38 (just .21 behind the winner), third in the 110 hurdles in 15.94, and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.53. All three of those times are season bests for Nielson. Tripp Palmer finished in a three-way tie for second place in the high jump when he and two other athletes cleared six feet, two inches. Keaton Ivins was third in the boys long jump with a distance of 21 feet and Savannah Richmond took third in the girls discus with an impressive throw of 101-1.5. Jared Burke came home fourth in the boys shot put with a distance of 42 feet, ten inches. The boys sprint medley team of Abram Lyman, Josiah LaPalmer, Stetson Black, and Miken Keith crossed the line sixth in 3:58.09. And the girls 4x100 relay team of Reaghan Laws, Adison Ivins, Addison Helquist, and Keezie Flannery finished eighth with a time of 53.91. Following the trip to Price some members of the team continued up to Provo to close out the weekend at the BYU Invitational on Saturday, May 4.
An impressive 132 schools were represented, so points were at a premium among the nearly 3,300 competitors. Still, San Juan managed to snag four of those points when Tripp Palmer cleared six feet, three inches to finish fifth in the boys high jump. Other strong finishes for the Broncos included Savannah Richmond’s 40th in the girls discus with a throw of 98-5.0 and Jared Burke’s 65th-place performance in the boys shot put with a distance of 42-5.0. In addition to his points-scoring finish in the high jump, Tripp Palmer came home 71st with his javelin toss of 132 feet, seven inches.
This week the San Juan track team is vying for the Region 15 Championship in Salina Tuesday and Wednesday, May 7-8.
