San Juan High School senior to wrestle in state All-Star event
San Juan High School senior Callen Burke will wrestle in the 23rd annual Ross Brunson Utah High School All-Star Duals on Tuesday, January 10.
Burke was selected to wrestle at 285 pounds and will represent the 1A and 2A classifications in the annual event at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Heading into the new year, Burke is 16-0 on the season and is among 118 high school wrestlers who will participate in the All-Star event.
According to the Deseret News, the event “has evolved immensely over the past [20-plus] years and continues to be one of the marquee nights on the calendar for the wrestling community.”
Since Burke’s match will occur after our press deadline next week, we will have the result in the January 18 issue of the San Juan Record.
The San Juan High School wrestling team closed out 2022 at the Manti Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday, December 16-17. The Broncos won four of six duals to finish third in Group 2, then suffered a loss to Carbon in the third place finals.
Callen Burke led the way for the Broncos, going 6-0 on the weekend with five wins by fall. He was also seventh in most pins in the least time with six pins in 7:05.
Burke is an impressive 16-0 on the season and is headed to Utah Valley University in Orem to wrestle in the annual All-Star duals on January 10.
Four Bronco wrestlers had six wins and one loss in Manti. Deklan Helquist registered three falls and a 17-6 major decision. Parker Snyder had four wins by fall and an 8-2 decision.
Logan Keith picked up two wins by fall with 7-3 and 5-1 decisions. And Taydan Mark got three wins by fall, a 14-4 major decision, and a 7-1 decision.
Chad Yellow and JD Palmer were both 5-2 on the weekend with two of Yellow’s wins by fall. Nicholas Joe was 3-4 with a win by fall. Trace Bennett was also 3-4 with a 9-5 decision.
Grady Lacy was 2-2 with a win by fall and Lynnox Benn got a win by fall at the tournament. San Juan is set to open 2023 in Monroe with 2A duals this Friday and Saturday, January 6-7.
