San Juan girls tennis team finishes sixth in region championship, gears up for state

The San Juan High School girls tennis team picked up three wins at the Region 18 Championship played in Monroe, UT on Monday, September 21. The Lady Broncos finished sixth as a team at the event.
In first doubles play Kellyn Davis and Sadie Black defeated Rexlynn and Ryann Jessen of Duchesne in round two. They lost the first set 6-0 but rallied impressively to win the second set 6-4 and the third 6-3.
Sariah Sweeten and Elsie Grover came home with two wins in rounds one and three of second doubles play.
They defeated Mariah Owens and Reegan Sorensen of Gunnison Valley 6-3 and 6-1 in the first round. Then they took down Grand County’s Annabelle Knurbin and Lillie Stanfield 7-5, 2-6, and 10-3 in the third round.
Both doubles teams will represent San Juan at the 2026 Utah State Girls Tennis Championships this weekend. Davis and Black will play Manti in the first round on Thursday, October 1 while Sweeten and Grover will take on Waterford. Both of those matches will be played at Brighton High School.
In other matches at the region championship Evony Sampson battled hard but suffered tough losses in first singles play. Jordan Jones played well but suffered losses in the second singles bracket, and Kayeli Bradford played hard in third singles.
Prior to the trip to Monroe the Lady Broncos closed out their regular season with matches against Duchesne in Blanding on Tuesday, September 15.
Sariah Sweeten and Elsie Grover registered San Juan’s only win in the contest in second doubles play, defeating Brooklyn McPhie and Addy Reinhardt 6-3 and 6-0.
