San Juan girls soccer team finishes regular season with four wins in last six games, looks to make noise in state tournament
The San Juan High School girls soccer team closed out their regular season with four wins in their final six games from September 22 to October 6.
The Lady Broncos earned wins over Gunnison Valley, South Sevier, Millard, and Parowan. They were defeated in the last two games of the season by Enterprise and Grand County.
On September 22 the team traveled to Gunnison where they dominated the Lady Bulldogs 3-0, scoring two goals in the first half and one in the second. Adele Parsens, Kloe Jones, and Ellie Beck scored for San Juan and Colee Crofts earned her third shutout win of the season.
A couple days later Crofts got her fourth shutout of the year—a 14-save gem—as the Lady Broncos defeated South Sevier 4-0 in Blanding. The team scored three goals in the first half and one in the second. Ari Adams registered a hattrick in the win.
The team picked up their third win in a row in a home game against Millard on September 29. San Juan led 1-0 at halftime, but had to outscore the Lady Eagles 2-1 in the second to earn a 3-1 victory. Adams led the way offensively for the girls with two goals. Jaynie McNaughtan scored the other.
In San Juan’s first game in October the team traveled a long distance to Parowan where they won their fourth straight 4-1. Adams again enjoyed a multi-goal game with two. Havyn Pehrson netted one for the Lady Broncos and Oaysis Nielson rounded out the scoring.
The win over Parowan was San Juan’s ninth this season which matches the team’s most wins ever in a season that they set last year. They narrowly missed setting a new mark in that department when they traveled to play Enterprise on Saturday, October 3.
The Lady Wolves scored in the first half and hung onto that 1-0 lead at halftime. But the Lady Broncos rallied to score a goal to tie the game in the second half. The goal came off the foot of Brooklyn Lameman and was assisted by Nadiia Krukovska.
Neither team scored again in regulation, so the contest went to a shootout tied 1-1. Unfortunately San Juan fell in the shootout 2-0. The loss spoiled a stellar 29-save effort by goalkeeper Colee Crofts and kept the Lady Broncos at nine wins in the season.
San Juan closed out their regular season Tuesday, October 6 with a tough matchup against the #3-ranked team in the 2A standings, which happened to be local rival Grand County. The Lady Red Devils had won the first matchups between the teams 5-1 on September 10.
This time San Juan was unable to find the back of the net, but it wasn’t for not trying as the girls put 17 shots on net. Grand scored twice in the first half and twice in the second to sweep the season series 4-0.
With their 9-9 overall record the Lady Broncos earned the #9 seed in the 2A Utah Girls Soccer State Tournament, which is set to begin on Wednesday, October 14. They’ll travel to Ogden to take on #8 St. Joseph at 4pm.
