The San Juan High School girls basketball team broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 on the year with a big win over Bryce Valley in Blanding this past Saturday, December 14.
The Lady Broncos gave up a 13-point first-half lead but clawed their way through the second half, trading the lead with the Lady Mustangs to earn the very nice 53-49 comeback win.
San Juan led 14-8 after one quarter and stretched that lead to 21-8 midway through the second. But Bryce Valley stormed back to make the score 28-21 at halftime.
The Lady Mustangs kept coming in the third quarter, steadily chipping away at the Lady Broncos’ lead and pulling to within four points at the end of the frame 38-34.
Bryce Valley finally took their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter and the battle was on. The teams went back-and-forth down to the wire with San Juan getting some key buckets down the stretch to secure the victory.
Kaidence Mitchell led the way for the Lady Broncos with a very impressive 20 points. Syndel Atcitty added eight and Khimya Fullwood collected seven.
Madi Adams scored six points, and Hayden Shumway and Daveigh Mitchell got three apiece. Kaiden Mitchell scored the only three-point basket in the game for San Juan.
It was a nice bounce-back win for the Lady Broncos since they had suffered a tough 68-33 loss to Panguitch the night before on their home court.
Like the boys team, the Lady Bobcats are predicted to be the top team in the 1A classification this season, and they showed why on December 13 as they jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter and increased it to 30-18 at halftime.
They outscored San Juan 23-7 in the third quarter to make the score 53-25 heading into the final frame. Kaidence Mitchell was the leading scorer for the Lady Broncos with 11 points.
Khimya Fullwood scored nine points including one three-point basket. Hayden Shumway added four points. Macee Palmer and Madi Adams both hit one three-pointer each for three points apiece.
Syndel Atcitty got two points in the loss and Daveigh Mitchell scored one. The girls are gearing up for their final game before the Christmas break and it will be a fun one between local rivals.
They welcome the Whitehorse Lady Raiders to the San Juan High School gym on Thursday, December 19. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
