Region 23 Basketball heating up

In another cross-county matchup last week, the Monticello Buckaroos and the Monument Valley Cougars basketball teams faced off at Monument Valley High School on Tuesday, January 18.

In the girls contest the #5 ranked Monument Valley girls prevailed over the #18 Monticello girls by a score of 53-17.

The lady cougars were led in scoring by frontcourt players Neveah Wilson and Raemi Nez who both came off the bench to score 15 and 9 points respectively as the Cougars led from wire to wire. The lady bucks were led in scoring by Kylie Rogers who finished the game with seven points.

In the boy's matchup, the #10 ranked Buckaroos got the best of the #8 ranked Cougars in a 74-43 victory for Monticello.

The Buckaroos were led by Landon Ewart who finished the game with 20 points, while Boston Freestone added nine including a perfect three for three from behind the arc, and Easton Young contributed 13 points.

Tommy Sheeran led the Bucks with seven boards of the bench, while Young had a team-high five assists in the Buckaroo’s boys-only game of the week.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Doreon Chee who finished the game with 15 points.

On Wednesday night the Whitehorse Raiders basketball teams made the trip to Rockpoint, Arizona for non-conference play.

The #10 ranked lady Raiders fell to the Cougars 66-38, while the boys cruised to an 85-43 victory.

In the boys game, the #7 ranked Raiders were led in scoring by Brett James who had 24 points, while Tyrell Benally added 16 and Nicolas Howell contributed 12.

On Thursday night the Lady Buckaroos fell to Grand County 82-36.

On Friday night the Monument Valley basketball teams hosted Green River in region play.

The Cougar boys got the 64-55 win over the Pirates while the Cougar girls earned a 49-35 victory led by Alyah Blackwater’s 14-point night.

Also in action over the weekend was the Whitehorse Raiders. As the teams played in Price against Pinnacle on Friday night before playing a Saturday game in Green River.

The lady Raiders earned a 54-39 win on Friday and followed it up with a 59-44 victory on Saturday.

The Whitehorse boys also went 2-0 on the weekend starting with a 52-44 win on Friday over Pinnacle.

Benally had 16 points on the game while D’Wayne Nakai contributed 14 in the win.

On Saturday the Raiders boys team beat Green River 75-64. James, Nakai, and Lyric Phillips all finished with 21 points in the high-scoring affair.
