Monument Valley hosts race ahead of region

The Monument Valley cross country team cut out the travel this week to compete at home in the their own Mustang Invitational. Runners enjoyed the cooler weather and spectacular views.
Deleana Yellowman was the first female Cougar across the finish line, earning 18th place overall with a time of 25:54 and leading her team to a fifth-place finish.
Yellowman was followed by Latisha Mutte in 20th with a time of 26:01 and Emily Curley in 27th with a time of 26:33. Gabriellynn Atene was the next athlete to come in, finishing 30th in 27:11.
Rounding out the team were December Smith in 34th with a time of 28:32 and Crystal Peterman in 35th in 29:09.
Joseph Rodiguez led the Monument Valley boys team to a fourth-place finish with his tenth-place performance in 19:58. Just two places later in 12th place, Matthew Curley finished with a time of 20:11.
The next three athletes crossed the line within ten seconds of each other. Justin Yazzie led the trio in 21st with a time of 21:05. Konner Begay and Logan Begay followed Yazzie in 23rd and 26th with times of 21:12 and 21:15.
Shaun Tuni and Dominich Todacheenee rounded out the Cougar boys with 29th and 32nd place finishes and times of 21:34 and 21:39.
Monument Valley will host Monticello and Whitehorse in the Region 23 Championship on Wednesday, October 19 with the 1A state meet coming up Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25-26.
