Monument Valley girls win tourney

The Monument Valley girls basketball team won the annual Buffalo Shootout tournament at Valley High School on December 8 and 9.
The Lady Cougars opened the tourney with a 59-33 victory over Parowan on December 8. They took a 20-13 lead after one quarter before an impressive defensive second quarter their lead to 31-17 at halftime.
The Lady Cougars kept rolling in the second half with a 45-24 lead after three quarters before closing the game with the 59-33 victory.
Monument Valley was led in scoring by Nevaeh Wilson who had 12 points. Shimequa Hudson scored 11 while Precious Bedonie had ten points.
Shilah Williams, Mariah Begaye, and Shikeeya Hudson all had five points each.
Malaya Blackmountain scored four and Shaundin Blackwater and Kaylisa Tome each had two points.
On December 9 the Monument Valley girls defeated tournament host Valley 49-31. The Lady Cougars built a big 17-8 lead after one quarter but the Lady Buffaloes decreased the deficit to 21-16 at halftime. Monument Valley went on to win the second half though, leading 33-22 after the third quarter before extending their lead to the final of 49-31.
The Lady Cougars were led by Wilson who had 17 points and Shimequa Hudson who scored 16. Blackmountain scored seven while Bedonie had four points. Shikeeyah Hudson added three with Begaye scoring two.
The Lady Cougars have an impressive 6-1 record going into the Christmas break. They'll get back to action at the SENAI Tournament in Albuquerque December 28-30.
The Monument Valley boys team went 0-2 at the 1A Preview at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield over the weekend. The Cougars were defeated by Piute 65-30 on December 8, followed by a loss to Milford 65-26 on December 9.
The boys' record sits at 1-4 but they’ll have four games this weekend against 1A Utah opponents at the Pinnacle Panther Winter Classic in Price.
