Monument Valley boys and Whitehorse girls basketball start off season

The Monument Valley High School boys basketball team traveled to Kane County for a weekend road trip on November 18-19.
In their first game on Friday, they struggled to get the offense in gear and suffered a 79-17 loss to 2A Kanab. Doreon Chee scored 14 of the Cougars’ points, including a couple three-point baskets. Zachariah Begay scored the other three points for Monument Valley.
The team produced a little more offense in their Saturday matchup against Valley, but still came up short 79-26. Chee again led the Cougar scoring with seven points. This time he had more help though.
Keshawne Atene scored six points, Begay got five, Tyten T collected four, and Shonlee Stanley and Aketcheta Shortman got two apiece.
Whitehorse Girls
The Whitehorse High School girls basketball team was in Richfield for the 1A Preview on November 18-19. They battled hard, but suffered losses to Wayne 34-18 and Escalante 28-22.
Against Wayne on Friday Shantel Begay led the way for the Raiders with four points. Shania Mitchell, Dakotah Cly, and Heidi Clark all scored three points apiece. Alyssa Eltsosie and Lamyia Begay got two each and Harmony Thomas scored a point.
On Saturday against Escalante Whitehorse led at halftime 13-5 but the Moquis stormed back to outscore the Raiders 23-9 in the second half for the comeback win.
Shunbaah Begay led Whitehorse scoring with nine points. Clark and Kiera Chee scored three apiece, Mitchell and Shantel Begay poured in two apiece, and Cly scored one.
All four of the south county schools’ basketball teams are playing in the annual Jerry Richardson Memorial Chieftain Invitational this Thursday through Saturday, December 1-3 in Shiprock, New Mexico.
