Monticello wrestling team wins four duals at Juab Tournament

After a few weeks of mandatory delays, COVID tests, restrictions, and cancelled events, the Monticello Buckaroo wrestling season has finally begun.

The Buckaroo wrestlers took to the road this past weekend for their first action of the year at the Juab Tournament.

With new limitations on tournaments because of the coronavirus, the tournament was held as two one-day events with 12 teams competing on each day in five duals instead of the typical 24-team, two-day tournament.

Due to restrictions, the only fans allowed to attend were parents of wrestlers, but the Buckaroos still had a good crowd cheering for them.

With a large contingent of Buckaroo faithful unable to attend, the Monticello Buckaroo Wrestling Facebook page broadcast live during each dual with Art Adair providing commentary.

The Buckaroos won duals over Manti and North Sevier. Each team had several open spots, but the Buckaroos came out on top in head-to-head matches 31-12 against Manti and 39-6 over North Sevier. The Buckaroos were defeated by Uintah B.

In the silver pool, the Buckaroos lost to Pleasant Grove 39-36 and Timpanogos 43-30. In head-to-head matches, the Buckaroos came out on top in both duals, 30-9 against Pleasant Grove and 18-13 against Timpanogos. The Buckaroos had six open spots this weekend.

Robert Musselman led the team over the weekend, winning all four of his matches, three by fall.

Buckaroos Javlin Robison and Brevin Olson each finished at 4-1. Paxton Christensen and Tuff Adair ended the weekend with 3-1 records.

Oakley Adams earned two wins on the weekend, with Tyler Thayn and Logan Draper each picking up a win by fall.

In the JV tournament, Zac Thayn was 4-1 with Thomas Fullmer at 2-2 and Treydon Harris at 1-1.

After both days’ stats were tallied, Buckaroo Brevin Olson made the list for most pins in the least time, in ninth place with four falls in 3:44 seconds.

This week the Buckaroos will head to Blanding for a dual with the San Juan Broncos on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. You can hear that one live on Redrock 92.7 FM.

They’ll travel to the Manti tournament on Friday, December 18 with wrestling action beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Wrestling parents will again be the only fans allowed to attend, but Buckaroo fans can catch the action on the Monticello Buckaroo Wrestling Facebook page. Matches will be live-streamed if internet capabilities allow, or updates will be posted throughout the day.
