Monticello wrestlers take second in 1A division tournament

The Monticello High School wrestlers brought home a second-place trophy from the Utah 1A Division A Tournament January 27 at Telos Academy in Orem.
The Buckaroos finished with 202 points. Panguitch won the tourney with 266 points and Piute scored 123 to finish third.
Arturo Gutierrez, John Leber, Thomas Fullmer, and Camren Carpenter were all crowned Division Champions. Nine Buckaroos in all wrestled in championship matches.
Gutierrez earned a win by fall in the semifinal round and made quick work of his competition in the finals, earning a win by fall in 37 seconds.
Leber earned a quick 20-second fall in the quarterfinals before an exciting 10-8 finish. He scored a takedown as time ran out to win in the semifinal round, then fought to the end in the finals to win by fall in the third period.
Fullmer earned a 40-second win by fall in the semifinals and finished with a second-round fall in the finals.
Carpenter wasted no time in either of his matches, winning in 13 seconds in the semis and 26 seconds in the finals. His semifinal win was the fastest fall of the tournament.
Earning second-place medals for Monticello were Landon Shumway, Zac Thayn, Chandler Henderson, Tavon Black, and Jarum Robison.
In the semifinal round Shumway earned a 43-second fall while Thayn and Henderson each earned second-period wins by fall. Black earned a tough 7-3 win and Robison earned a first-period win by fall.
Ronnie Harris finished third for the Buckaroos, earning two first-period wins by fall in early rounds before defeating teammate Caleb Coleman by fall in the placement round.
Coleman earned a fourth-place medal, earning two first-period wins by fall in the early rounds. Evan Carpenter also finished fourth for MHS and Anson Kendrick came home sixth.
The Buckaroos will have a week off before traveling to the 2024 Utah State Wrestling Tournament February 9-10 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
