Monticello wrestlers open new year at Battle at the Pound

Monticello High School wrestlers hit the mat for the first time in 2021, opening the new year at the Battle at the Pound at Gunnison Valley High School Saturday, January 9.

Twelve Buckaroos competed in the event, and the team finished in ninth place with 143 points in a field of 15 teams.

Senior Brevin Olson led MHS on the weekend, finishing with a championship medal, earning first place with five wins, two by fall.

Senior Tuff Adair and junior Logan Draper each earned second-place finishes. Adair won three by fall in the first period with his only loss coming in a close 5-4 match. Draper was 3-2, winning two matches by fall and a 9-4 decision.

Senior Paxton Christensen and junior Tyler Thayn each finished third in their weight class. Both wrestlers were 3-2 on the weekend, each winning all three matches by first period fall.

Sophomore Treydon Harris won two matches by fall on his way to a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Javlin Robison finished in fifth with three wins by fall.

Junior Cameron Bailey and sophomore Oakley Adams each earned a win by fall. Buckaroo freshmen Thomas Fullmer, Chandler Henderson, and Zac Thayn wrestled hard with Fullmer getting a win by fall and Henderson earning a 6-0 win.

Overall for the tournament Tuff Adair had the third-fastest pin of the weekend with a 15-second fall.

The Buckaroos travel to Blanding Thursday, January 14 for a rivalry dual with the Broncos you’ll hear live on Redrock 92.7 FM. Wrestling action begins at 7 p.m.

Monticello hits the road to Orem for the JV Rumble on Saturday. Next Wednesday, January 20 the Bucks host the San Juan Broncos for senior night.
