The Monticello and San Juan high school volleyball teams both hit the road for separate tournaments this past weekend, August 25-26, with each team playing six matches in just two days.
For Monticello it was the Nephi Swarm Invitational hosted by Juab High School, and for San Juan it was the Dixie Fly High Tournament in St. George.
The Broncos faired slightly better, going 3-3 on the trip in what was the opening games of their season. The Buckaroos were coming off a season-opening sweep at Grand County on August 17, but went 2-4 on their trip.
The wins for Monticello came against Hillcrest and Providence Hall, while the losses were to North Sanpete, Emery, Hillcrest, and Ogden.
San Juan topped Valley twice and Jordan while losing to Canyon View, Panguitch, and Dixie. So after the first full week of action the Buckaroos are 3-4 and the Broncos are 3-3.
The two rivals squared off on Tuesday, August 29 in Monticello in the first of two meetings this season. The match was played too late for the San Juan Record press deadline, so we’ll report the results next week.
For the remainder of the week, Monticello is set for a Region 19 showdown in Green River on Thursday, August 31. They’ll close out their season series with Grand County next Tuesday, September 5.
San Juan will host Bayfield, CO on Thursday, August 31 with a trip to Salina for a Region 15 match against North Summit coming up on Tuesday, September 5.
