Monticello High senior Cedar English is track star of the week

Monticello High School senior Cedar English was named the week 34 boys track star of the week by the Deseret News on April 19.

English has consistently been one of the best jumpers in the state this season and, according to the Des News, has done so “with an unselfish attitude to help his team be as successful as possible.”

Until last week, English’s long jump of 22-07 at Juab High School on April 2 was the best jump in the state among all classifications.

On April 23 Westlake junior Elias Gerald jumped 23-00 to top that mark, but the very next day English jumped 22-10 to claim the second-longest jump in the state.

English also has the sixth-longest javelin throw in the state this year at 167-4 and he’s tied for ninth in the high jump with a 6-2.

Monticello head track and field coach Jeff Hunt told the Des News, “Cedar has 100-percent bought into doing whatever he needs to do not only for his own success, but also for the team’s success as well. We can put him in almost any event and know we are going to get everything he has.”

English has been a leader for MHS all season long and is having an impressive senior year. He was also recently named to the Deseret News first team 2A All-State basketball team.
