Monticello High School 2022-2023 sports teams scored a combined 53 points to earn the 1A Runner-Up spot in the annual Deseret News All-Sports Awards released on June 12.
Bolstered by a girls golf state championship and second-place finishes in eight-man football and boys and girls cross country, the Buckaroos scored points in ten of the 22 possible sports disciplines that are used to determine the total scores for school sports programs.
They scored ten points for girls golf; eight points each in football, girls track and field, and boys track and field; four each in wrestling, boys track, and volleyball; three in boys golf and girls track; and one point in basketball to win the #2 spot in the rankings.
The All-Sports Award, which the Deseret News has been calculating for 45 years, determines the top overall athletic programs in each of the six classifications in the state. The schools with the best-performing teams consistently across all the sports score the most points.
Schools earn points for placing in the top eight at state. Ten points are awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. Points are divided when teams tie.
Schools earn points in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, and lacrosse.
