Monticello girls go 1-1 in region play at home

The Monticello girls basketball team split games in a region homestand this past week, defeating Pinnacle and falling to Green River in Region 23 play.
The Lady Buckaroo defense was tenacious in the first half against Pinnacle. They built a 4-0 lead after one quarter and expanded it to 16-4 at halftime.
Speaking after the game Coach Marcia Shumway shared her message at halftime. “I just told them, we don’t have the game in the bag. They still have to come out and fight hard and they still have a game to win.”
In the third quarter the Monticello offense did just that as they came alive to build a 37-9 lead. They kept it rolling in the final frame, earning a 51-25 victory over the Panthers.
The Lady Bucks were led in scoring by junior Kenlee Atwood who scored 15 on the game. Senior Avery Shumway scored 12 for Monticello.
Braylee Freestone, Jemma Robison, and Kahryme Alvarado each scored four points. Kaymee Freestone and Rosy Beh scored three apiece and Nikkie Gomez and MaKenna Peterson scored two each.
Coach Shumway had praise for the intensity her team brought in the game. “I have to give my starters credit tonight. They played great defense from the very begining. I don’t think anybody cost us a whole lot. They played a good hard game.”
Speaking after the game, senior Avery Shumway said the win was a team effort. “They all really impressed me. We all have our individual skills and tonight we just worked as a team together.”
On February 3 the Lady Buckaroos were defeated by the Green River pirates by a score of 74-45. The Pirates were led by senior Abby Erwin who finished the game with 45 points.
Monticello was led in scoring by Shumway who had 12 on the game, Beh scored 11 and Gomez had ten. Robison and Kaymee Freestone each scored four while Atwood and Alvarado each finished with two points.
Monticello played at Whitehorse on February 7 after the San Juan Record print deadline. The Lady Buckaroos are next in action on Tuesday, February 14 at home against Monument Valley. It’s the final home game of the regular season for MHS, so seniors will be honored before the game.
The Lady Bucks close out the season on Friday, February 17 on the road against Pinnacle in Price. All games will be broadcast on Redrock 92 and PictureItPalmer.com.
