Monticello boys advance to state tournament, girls fall in the opening round

Monticello defeated the Telos Titans 74-41 in the opening round of the 1A basketball tournament to advance to the state tournament on March 1-4 in Richfield Utah.
The #11-seeded Buckaroos defeated the #22 Titans on their homecourt on February 25.
Monticello opened with a 19-8 first quarter lead, and extended their lead 39-22 at halftime. Monticello won the second half as well extending their lead 57-33 after three quarters with the final score favoring Monticello 74-41.
The Buckaroos were led in scoring by senior Easton Young the senior finished the game with 25 points including five made three-point shots. Coach Josh Keyes remarked after the game “When Easton shoots in rhythm he’s as good a shot as you get.”
Fellow senior Tommy Sheeran scored 18 with seniors Donovan atwood and Landon Ewart each chipping in weight points. JD McDonald scored six while Curtis Bunker, Mason Atwood, Sam Snyder and Jaeden Camacho all scored two points, Jackson Keyes scored one point in the game.
In addition to leading the Buckaroos in scoring on the game Young also set up his teammates with some great passing. Speaking after the game Young says his production is a result of trying his hardest. “Lots of effort in practice, lots of efforts in games. Try and get my teammates the best looks they can get, try and be unselfish as possible.”
The Buckaroos face the #6 ranked Valley Buffalos in the second round of the state tournament on March 1.
The game is scheduled for 8:30 pm at Richfield High School. The game will be broadcast on Red Rock 92.7 FM.
Monticello girls were defeated 46-34 in the opening round of the 1A basketball tournament by #16 seed Intermountain Christian. The #17 seed lady Buckaroos fought hard on the road but fell short in the final game of the year.
