Local student athletes garner sports accolades for strong performances

One local high school sports team scored a top-ten state ranking and two athletes were named to their respective all-region team after the 2020-2021 season came to a close in recent days.

Monticello High School teams combined to earn a 2A top-ten ranking in the annual Deseret News All-Sports Awards when their season points were compiled this past week.

The Buckaroos scored eight points in boys track and field; five each in girls cross country, boys cross country, and girls golf; two in wrestling; and 1.5 in basketball to win the #10 spot in the rankings.

The All-Sports Award, which the Deseret News has been calculating for 43 years, denotes the top overall athletic programs in each of the six classifications in the state.

Schools earn points for placing in the top eight at state. Ten points are awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. Points are divided when teams tie.

Schools earn points in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, and lacrosse.

Two San Juan High School baseball players were named to the Region 12 All-region team following the completion of the 2021 season.

Bronco senior Jace Johnson and junior Jace Palmer were the honorees. As a senior this season, Johnson provided solid leadership for his teammates.

Palmer was Mister Reliable for San Juan, specifically on defense. He was an amazing 35 of 36 in putouts this season, collected 31 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched, and finished the year with a .308 batting average.

Congratulations to all of these excellent San Juan County student athletes on their accomplishments in the 2020-2021 sports season.
