Lady Raiders have three wins, two losses after first week of season

The Whitehorse High School girls basketball team opened their season with a 3-2 record going 1-1 at the 1A Preview in Richfield and 2-1 at the Shiprock Chieftain Invitational this past weekend.

On November 19 the Raiders tipped off their year with a 41-30 win over the Tintic Miners. Whitehorse was led by balanced scoring from their senior trio.

Kailee Tohonnie led the way scoring 12 points, while Heidi Thomas had 11 and McKeeda Sam added 10.

The Lady Raiders also got contributions from Lamyia Benally who had a three-point bucket. Laila Etsitty and Shelby Vasku each had two points while Shania Mitchell had one.

Mitchell led the way on the boards for the Lady Raiders. She and Thomas pulled down seven apiece, Vasku had six, and Tohonnie had five.

Tohonnie led the team with four assists, while Sam had two.

Tohonnie also recorded a double-double with ten steals to go along with her 12 points. Thomas had five steals while Mitchell and Sam had three apiece.

On November 20 the Whitehorse girls faced off against 1A foe Escalante, losing a close one 37-32.

Thomas led the way with 17 points, while Tohonnie contributed 13 and Sam had two.

Vasku led the way on the boards pulling down ten rebounds while Tohonnie and Mitchell had seven each and Thomas had five. 

Sam had two assists while Tohonnie, Vasku, and Mitchell had one each. 

Thomas forced three steals for the Lady Raiders while Tohonnie and Shunbaah Begay had two steals apiece.

This past weekend Whitehorse played at the Shiprock Chieftain Invitational Thursday through Saturday, December 2-4.

They won their game on Thursday 56-28 over Navajo Pine and their game on Friday against Shiprock 51-40. The Lady Raiders dropped their final game of the weekend to Navajo Prep 48-27.

A rematch between Whitehorse and Navajo Pine is scheduled for Tuesday, December 7 after press deadline.

This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday they’ll play at the Shash Holiday Classic in Wingate, NM.
