Lady Cougars win five of six in past week, improve to 11-4, remain sixth in 1A standings

It was been an exceptionally busy past week for the Monument Valley High School volleyball team. The Lady Cougars played six games in a four-day period and won all but one of them.
They began the week with a Region 19 rivalry showdown with the Green River Lady Pirates in Monument Valley on Wednesday, September 23.
The girls had a slow start in the game, falling behind two sets to none with 25-19 and 26-24 losses. But the home team rallied impressively to win three straight sets 25-19, 25-14, and 15-13 to close out a solid comeback win.
Naomi White had 15 kills in the game with Nesbah Hunt adding 13. Nay’myia Morgan and Meliyah Holiday both had 24 assists each, and they served five and four aces respectively.
Naomi White collected 32 digs and four blocks. Natalin Russell had 25 digs and Nesbah Hunt got 24 for the Lady Cougars.
On Friday and Saturday, September 25-26 the girls traveled all the way up to Provo to play in the Freedom Prep Academy Tournament where they went 4-1, losing only to Maeser Prep in the championship game.
Monument Valley rattled off wins over Salt Lake Academy and American Prep West Valley on Friday, then followed that up with wins over Pinnacle and Escalante on Saturday before falling in the final game of the weekend.
Against Salt Lake Academy the Lady Cougars won in straight sets 25-17 and 25-18. They lost the first set against American Prep West Valley 25-19, but rallied to win the match with 25-15 and 16-14 wins.
Monument Valley won easily over familiar Region 19 foe Pinnacle to start off their Saturday with a 25-7, 25-4 straight-sets victory.
It was a bit harder against Escalante but the girls still took care of business in straight sets 25-20 and 25-14. The Lady Cougars fought hard but lost the final game in straight sets to Maeser Prep 25-13 and 25-23.
Monument Valley is now 11-4 on the season, ranked sixth in the Utah 1A standings. They’re set for another busy week, mainly on the road.
On Tuesday, September 29 they hosted Rock Point AZ after the San Juan Record print deadline. On Wednesday, September 30 they’ll travel to play Region 19 rival Monticello.
They hit the road again on Friday, October 2 for a rematch with Pinnacle in Price. Then on Saturday, October 3 they’ll head back up to Green River to close out their season series with the Lady Pirates.
