Lady Broncos set to open softball season in Moab on Tuesday

It has been almost ten months since the San Juan High School softball team shocked the 2A softball world with a 9-5 upset win over #2 Duchesne in the 2024 state second round in Spanish Fork.
The game was a big milepost for the rebuilding San Juan softball program and though their season ended with tough back-to-back losses after that win, they are eager to build on the momentum they started as they open the 2025 season this Tuesday, March 4.
As he enters the fourth year of his second stint coaching the Lady Broncos, Head Coach Mike Bowers knows his team is poised to break through this year.
“San Juan softball is on course to become the powerhouse it once was,” Bowers stated at the end of the 2024 season.
The Lady Broncos return almost all of their players for the 2025 season. Only Trinity Whatcott and Synessa Atcitty were lost due to graduation.
The team is anticipating the return of a host of offensive contributors. Junior Morgann McPherson and senior Sadie Cosby both hit .370 last year, combining for nine doubles and 33 RBIs.
Junior Averie Gilson led San Juan with 13 doubles, three triples, and a couple home runs as a sophomore. She drove in 27 runs and built a very solid .347 batting average.
Junior Madden Perkins hit .306 with three doubles, a triple, and a team-high four dingers, driving in 19 runs. Fellow junior Khatira Keith sported a .304 average last year with three doubles, a triple, and 14 RBIs.
And junior Elizabeth Palmer had a .212 average with three doubles, a homer, and 12 RBIs in 2024. The Lady Broncos are also looking forward to having junior Miley Harrison back.
Though she only played in 12 games last year she was excellent in that time with a .346 average, a double, a homer, and seven RBIs.
San Juan stole a fairly impressive 84 bases last season and will look to continue their attack on the basepaths in 2025. Perkins led the way with 15 swipes in 2024, Palmer got 13, and McPherson 12.
Though San Juan will miss the excellent 2024 pitching of Trinity Whatcott, there are two experienced girls poised to fill her shoes in 2025.
Keith pitched 41.1 innings last season, including the entire state tournament game against Duchesne. And Gilson helmed the mound for 11.2 innings in 2024.
The Lady Broncos will travel to Moab to take on Grand County this Tuesday, March 4. San Juan won both matchups with the rival Lady Red Devils last year, outscoring them by a combined score of 29-6.
