Cougars, Buckaroos square off on hardwood

The Monticello and Monument Valley basketball teams had a busy week with the two facing off against each other in Monument Valley on January 14.
In the early game the Monument Valley girls got the win 64-37 in a game that they led throughout.
The Cougars were led by Dakotah Cly who finished with 19 points on the game, Kaylisa Tome scored 13 points while Malaya Blackmountain and Ayainna Cly each finished with eight poins.
Also scoring for the Cougars with six points was Shilah Williams. LeighAn Atene and Shikeeya Hudson each had four points while Shaundin Blackwater scored two points.
In unofficial statistics Ayainna Cly had five assists while Williams had four. Blackwater and Hudson each recorded seven rebounds as well.
Monticello was led by Makenna Peterson who scored 22 points, while Braylee Freestone scored 11 and Maron Freestone had 5.
Braylee Freestone also led the team with four rebounds and three assists. Mechaiyah Lansing recorded five steals and one block for Monticello.
In the boys game Monticello cruised to a 71-25 win. The Bucks were led by Cache Young who finished with 16 points while Jackson Keyes scored 12 and Kaden Pehrson chipped in 11.
Scoring eight for Monticello were Kooper Nielson and Tommy Morrison, while Triston Felix scored five. Traken Lee had four and Logan Bowles and Jaeden Camacho each had two points.
In unofficial statistics Morrison and Pehrson each had ten rebounds, while Pehrson also had five assists, with Nielson and Young each recording four assists.
On January 16 the Monument Valley girls lost a heartbreaking game to Shiprock 43-41. Dakotah Cly led the Cougars with 15 points, while Hudson scored ten. Blackmountain had six, Tome five, Williams three and Blackwater two.
On January 17 Monticello boys traveled to Green River for a showdown between the #6 and #7 ranked teams in the 1A RPI. The Pirates built a lead in the first quarter that they would not relent with the final score favoring Green River 71-57.
Pehrson led Monticello with 22 points while Young scored 21. Lee added six points while Camacho, Nielson and Keyes scored two points for the Buckaroos.
This week Monument Valley hosts Many Farms on Thursday before traveling to Pinnacle on Friday and Green River on Saturday. Monticello hosted Dove Creek on January 21 after the San Juan Record print deadline.
The Buckaroos travel to Montezuma Creek to take on the Whitehorse Raiders Friday, January 24. The games are at 5:30 and 7 p.m. and you can watch them online at StreamUtah.Live.
