Challenging 1A Preview for MHS Lady Buckaroos

The Monticello High School girls basketball faced some tough competition at the annual season-opening 1A Preview at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield this past weekend.
The Lady Buckaroos suffered a 43-26 loss to Bryce Valley in their first game on Friday, November 18. They trailed 13-3 after one quarter and 27-6 at halftime.
Monticello trailed 37-12 after three quarters but convincingly won the final frame 24-6 to make the final score 43-26 in favor of Bryce Valley.
The Lady Buckaroos were led in scoring by Kenlee Atwood who had 13 points and six steals. Jemma Robison had seven points while Alyssa Sanchez scored three. Talia Sanchez had two points and Braylee Freestone scored one.
Senior Kahryme Alvarado also recorded ten rebounds as the Lady Bucks shot 31 percent from the field, 14 percent from three-point range, and 3-of-10 at the free throw line.
In game two of the season on Saturday, November 19 MHS took on the defending 1A state champion Wayne Lady Badgers.
Monticello fell behind 15-3 after one quarter with the Lady Badgers expanding their lead to 33-10 at halftime. Wayne continued to pour it on in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 56-12.
Once again Monticello won the final frame 13-2 but Wayne finished with a decisive 58-25 win. This time Robison led the way for the Lady Buckaroos with 11 points.
Atwood and MaKenna Peterson scored four each and Braylee and Maren Freestone each had three in the game.
Monticello shot 25 percent from the field, shot 25 percent from three-point range, and went 3-for-7 from the free throw line.
The Lady Buckaroos will take a few days to enjoy the Thanksgiving break before getting back to action in their home opener on Tuesday, November 28 against local rival Grand County.
