Bucks move ahead in 8-player state playoffs, Whitehorse and Monument Valley seasons come to an end
San Juan teams went 1-2 in the inaugural 8-player quarterfinal matchups last week.
MONTICELLO
The Monticello Buckaroos advanced to the state semi-finals in a 56-14 win over the Altamont Longhorns on October 28.
The Buckaroos will face the Rich Rebels in the semi-finals at Southern Utah University on Thursday, November 3 at noon. That game will be broadcast on 92.7 FM.
The Buckaroos scored on their first offensive possession on a 65-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown run for Nic Lundell to make the score 7-0.
The following Monticello drive was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Thomas Fullmer and a successful two-poiont run by Easton Young to make the score 15-0 through the end of the 1st quarter.
In the 2nd quarter, Monticello capped a 36-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown catch thrown by JD McDonald to Easton Young to make the score 22-0. Monticello added their next touchdown on a two-yard run by Javelin Robison to make the score 29-0. The Longhorns then went on a touchdown drive to make the score 29-8.
Monticello responded with another touchdown when McDonald found Landon Ewart for a 33-yard touchdown to make the score 36-8 at halftime.
The Buckaroos scored on their first drive of the second half with a 7-yard touchdown run by Robert Morrison to make the score 43-8.
The Buckaroos added a one-yard touchdown run by Robison to make the score 50-8. Tavon Black added a 20-yard touchdown run near the end of the game, with Altamont adding another score as time expired to make the final score 56-14.
The win advances the Buckaroos to the 8-player semi-finals
MONUMENT VALLEY
The Monument Valley Cougars football team saw their season end in a loss to Rich High School in the quarterfinals of the Utah 8-player playoffs.
The game in Randolph saw the Rich Rebels score the first 32 points through the 3rd quarter. The Cougars responded in the 3rd by putting together a 70-yard scoring drive.
The drive was capped off with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Melias Cly to Doreon Chee. An unsuccessful two-point conversion made the score 32-6 in the 3rd quarter.
The Rebels added to their lead to make the score 48-6 in the 4th quarter. The Cougars scored their final points of the season on a defensive play. Chee intercepted a Rebel pass and returned it 75-yards for a pick six. To make the score 48-12.
WHITEHORSE
The Whitehorse Raiders football team season ended in a loss to Water Canyon High School in the quarter-finals of the Utah 8-player playoffs.
The Water Canyon Wildcats built a 30-0 lead in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Camron Nakai returned the kick 40 yards to the 27-yard line a four-yard run by Jose Gutierrez on first down set up the 23-yard touchdown pass from D’Wayne Nakai to Tristan Black. The duo also connected on a two-point conversion pass and catch to make the score 30-8 in the first quarter.
The Raider’s defense held strong on the next possession when the Wildcats failed to gain a first down on a miserable 4th and 25 attempt from their own 16-yard line.
The following three-play drive was capped by a 10-yard D’Wayne Nakai touchdown scramble. Nakai added the two-point conversion on a quarterback sneak. To make the score 30-16.
Water Canyon scored the remaining points in the game to make the final 62-16.
