Buckaroo wrestlers win Dave Smith Memorial Tourney in Price

It was another successful week for the Monticello Buckaroo Wrestlers as they conquered their third tournament of the year, earning the team championship trophy at the Dave Smith Memorial Tournament in Price December 13-14.
The Buckaroos had ten team members at the tournament and went 8-1 in duals, earning wins over Maple Mountain and San Juan who rounded out the top three teams.
They also defeated Carbon, Juan Diego, JV Extras, Dolores, American Leadership Academy, and Carbon 2. The Buckaroos were narrowly defeated by Emery.
Leading the way for Monticello were John Leber and Jarum Robison who each went 8-0 on the weekend. Leber continued his undefeated season in dominant fashion, earning four technical fall wins, 18-0, 15-0, 19-4, and 19-0.
He also secured three wins by fall and a 12-6 victory. Robison was a force for the Buckaroos, picking up six wins by fall, an 18-2 technical fall win, and a 15-9 decision.
Buckaroos with only one loss included Arturo Gutierrez, Landon Shumway, and Tyson Wheeler. Gutierrez earned five strong wins by fall, a 12-0 major decision, and an exciting 8-5 win.
Shumway earned four wins by fall and two big technical fall wins, 17-1 and 16-0. Wheeler had five exciting wins by fall and a 11-1 major decision win.
Ronnie Harris was 6-2 at the tournament, with four wins by fall, a 16-6 major decision, and an exciting 8-6 victory. Diego Cortez finished with a 5-3 record, earning all five big wins by fall.
Tavon Black and Noah Dilts were each 4-4 at the tournament. Black had three wins by fall and an 18-3 technical fall win. Dilts earned three wins by fall and had a thrilling 19-12 victory. Miles Coleman finished 4-5 with three wins by fall and a 14-3 major decision win.
Earlier in the week Monticello hosted Nucla, Norwood, and Grand on Wednesday, December 11. Against Grand Diego Cortez and Noah Dilts earned wins by fall. Arturo Gutierrez earned a 10-3 win and a16-3 win.
Jarum Robison and Zamien Lopez put in a good effort but were defeated. Against Norwood, John Leber posted a big 17-2 technical fall win. Tavon Black and Tyson Wheeler each added a win by fall. Landon Shumway and Ronnie Harris fought hard but were defeated.
This week the Buckaroos travel to Dolores, CO on Wednesday, December 18 and will attend the Manti Dual Tournament Friday and Saturday, December 20-21 before the Christmas break begins.
