Buckaroo wrestlers open season on the road

The Monticello High School wrestling team took to the mat on Wednesday, December 3 to start a new season of high school wrestling action.
The Buckaroos kicked off the year with a dual at Norwood, CO where Arturo Gutierrez got the team started with a dominating 15-0 technical fall win.
Bryson Adair was leading 9-0 when he turned his opponent for a win by fall. John Leber was all tied up at 7-7 when he scored a win by fall. And Miles Coleman took an early takedown before turning his opponent for a win by fall.
Also wrestling but coming up short were Christian Hunt, Diego Cortez, Hayden Peterson, Landon Shumway, Noah Dilts, and Zamian Lopez.
The Monticello wrestlers concluded a busy opening week at the Wolverine Classic in Bayfield, CO on Saturday, December 6.
Leading for the Buckaroos with third place finishes were John Leber and Noah Dilts. Leber earned a 17-1 technical fall win at 150 pounds and two wins by fall for the weekend. Dilts earned a win by fall at 285 pounds.
Diego Cortez, at 120 pounds, earned two wins by fall and had a 7-3 victory on his way to a fourth-place medal.
Also finishing fourth was Landon Shumway at 138 pounds, earning two wins by fall and a thrilling 9-8 victory.
Arturo Gutierrez earned a win by fall at 132 pounds and a 16-1 technical fall win for a 2-2 record and a sixth-place finish.
In the junior varsity brackets Bryson Adair earned a second-place finish at 138 pounds with three hard-fought wins by fall.
Zamian Lopez earned two exciting wins by fall on his way to a third-place medal. Evan Carpenter finished with a fourth-place medal at 126 pounds, earning three wins by fall.
Christian Hunt (126 pounds) and Hayden Peterson (132 pounds) each earned a win by fall for the Buckaroos.
Also wrestling hard for the Buckaroos were JJ Atwood at 175 pounds and Miles Coleman at 144 pounds.
This week the team will travel to Price on Friday and Saturday, December 12-13 to compete in the Carbon Tournament.
