The Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers saw some good action on the mats this past week, hosting a home meet with Nucla and Dolores December 13 then wrestling in eight duals at the Manti Holiday Classic December 16-17.
In their pool at Manti, the Buckaroos won duals against Wayne, Tintic, and Piute and were defeated by Altamont, Panguitch, and Milford.
In the day two brackets, they wrestled North Summit and Grand. The Buckaroos are open in five weights, giving up a potential 30 points in each dual. In head-to-head matches (not counting forfeits) the Buckaroos defeated Milford and Grand.
Leading the way for MHS was Treydon Harris who earned a 5-1 record with all five wins by fall. Josh Wheeler finished the weekend with a 6-2 record, earning three falls and a major decision. In addition, Wheeler kept the fans on the edge of their seats with two close wins, 4-3 and 4-1.
Javlin Robison finished the weekend 5-3, winning four by fall and a dominating 10-0 major decision. Robison lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Panguitch. Buckaroo Zac Thayn went 4-3 at the tournament, winning three by fall and one in a strong 10-2 major decision.
Tyson Wheeler and Camren Carpenter each finished the weekend at 4-4, both earning four valuable wins by fall for the Buckaroos.
Landon Shumway, Chandler Henderson, and Tavon Black each earned two wins on the weekend, all by fall. Jarum Robison wrestled hard for the Buckaroos, but suffered a season-ending injury at the tournament.
Earlier in the week the Buckaroos defeated Dolores 24-6 and Norwood 12-0 in head-to-head matches at home.
Against Norwood, Treydon Harris defeated Aiden Walton by fall in the first period and Landon Shumway defeated Owen Tacket by second period fall.
Against Dolores, Landon Shumway earned a first period fall over Dylan Koskie. Josh Wheeler earned a second period fall over Jake Vreeken, and Camren Carpenter earned a 26-second pin over Micah Vrtatko.
Buckaroo Treydon Harris defeated Nathan Hill by fall in the first period. Jarum Robison was defeated by Dolores’s Ethen Robson.
The Buckaroos are off for the Christmas break but will be back in action Friday, January 6 at Aztec, NM, and Saturday, January 7 at the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Pagosa Springs, CO.
