Broncos get job done on tough road trip

It wasn’t necessarily pretty this past weekend for the San Juan High School boys basketball team, but they did just enough to string together a couple wins over tough Region 19 opponents on the road.

On Friday, January 14 they sauntered into Monroe, UT and held off the South Sevier Rams 60-53, then followed that up with a 52-47 win in Beaver the following day.

In the Broncos’ defense, a number of players and coaches were suffering illness this past weekend, and they were fortunate to get the two wins in what head coach Travis Black described as a tough week getting prepared to play.

He said the team shot terribly and got beat on the boards, but the defense was good and they “gutted it out in two extremely hard places to win.”

San Juan led from start to finish against South Sevier, though the Rams made it interesting, putting up 19 points in the third quarter to pull to within five headed into the final frame.

In Beaver, the Broncos again led for most of the game other than a few seconds in the first half. But the Beavers gave them a scare when they pulled to within one point numerous times in the second half.

Jensen Grover led the scoring with 16 points against South Sevier. He hit three of five three-point shots and added four assists in the win. Cooper Black scored 15 points with seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Against Beaver, Ladd Ivins led the way with 16 points, four rebounds, and six steals. Cooper Black was next in line with 13 points, seven boards, and three steals.

The Broncos shot just 39.8 percent from the floor for the weekend, and 25 percent from three-point range. But they were good from the free throw line, hitting 26 of 35 attempts for 74 percent.

In a couple of shockers this past week, #1 Enterprise suffered two losses to Panguitch and Parowan, moving San Juan back into the top spot in the 2A RPI standings with a 13-3 record.

It’s a fairly light week but a tough matchup for the Broncos this week. They welcome the 8-5 #8 Kanab Cowboys to Blanding for another Region 19 showdown on Friday, January 21.

Tip time is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, and you can catch the game live on Redrock 92 and PictureItPalmer.com starting at 6:30 p.m.
