Annual high school golf fundraiser is largest ever

It was the biggest turnout ever for the 2020 annual San Juan High and Monticello High golf team fundraiser at the Hideout Golf Course on Saturday, May 30.
Event organizer Nathan Chamberlain reports that 26 teams of four stormed the course in Monticello for the annual scramble that brings in most of the funds the two high school golf teams receive each year.
It was the first tournament at the Hideout since COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed in San Juan County.
Although the tourney went off without a hitch, Chamberlain said there were some adjustments due to ongoing restrictions.
Usually a shotgun start, the event began with tee times this year to help players comply with social distancing requirements.
Chamberlain added that players usually get a nicer meal, but had to settle for hot dogs and hamburgers.
Prizes for the top three teams were donated by the Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, CO, the Moab Golf Course, and the Lake Powell National Golf Course in Page, AZ.
The 2020 winners are the Torres/McLaughlin team of Monticello/Moab – Manuel Torres, Doug McLaughlin, Jeff Nielson, and Rafe Saunders. Their round of 56 earned them green fees at the Conquistador Golf Course.
Competition was tight, and a four-way tie for second place had to be decided by a scorecard playoff.
Two teams from Moab, one from Monticello, and one from Blanding all shot a 57 on the day.
By virtue of an eagle on hole 16, team Chamberlain of Monticello – Michael Holyoak, Chase Doucet, Olivia Chamberlain, and Nathan Chamberlain – came home in second place, earning a round at the Moab Golf Course.
And following the scorecard playoff, the Wells team of Moab – Gail Wells, Darrin Wells, Darrin Tangren, and David Morey – finished third, winning green fees at Lake Powell National.
The golf season is now in full swing at the Hideout Golf Course. Upcoming events include the Spring Couples Scramble on June 5, the Arch and Horsehead Tournament June 13-14, and the Lions, Rotary, and Chamber Fundraiser on June 20.
