Monticello wrestlers set for state tournament

In their first year back in the 2A ranks, the Monticello Buckaroo Wrestlers took 13 wrestlers in 11 weights to the Divisional Tournament this past weekend.

As a team they finished in fifth place and qualified all 13 wrestlers for the state tournament this weekend.

The Buckaroos were only 20.5 points behind third place North Sevier, who have eight more wrestlers than MHS. 

Brevin Olson led the way for the Buckaroos, finishing the day on top of the podium as a division champion. Olson was also awarded the lower-weight tournament MVP by a vote of coaches.

Olson won by fall in the first period in the quarterfinals. He followed that with an impressive 15-0 technical fall win in the second period of his semifinal match. In the finals he defeated Duchesne’s Cael Skewes by fall early in the third period.   

Also making their way to the championship match for the Buckaroos were Paxton Christensen and Dillon Slack who both finished as runners-up in their weight class.

Christensen earned a win by fall in the first period in the semifinal round and was defeated by Larsen of Duchesne in the finals. Slack earned a win by fall in the semifinal round and was defeated by Thacker of Altamont in the finals. 

Zach Cecil and Tuff Adair each earned a third place medal. Cecil had three wins by fall and Adair earned two. 

Josh Wheeler finished in fifth with two wins by fall. Logan Draper earned two wins by fall on his way to a fifth place medal.

Robert Musselman finished in fifth place with two first period wins by fall. Javlin Robison earned a fifth place finish, winning his placement match over teammate Cameron Bailey by fall. Bailey finished in sixth place.

Tyler Thayn ended the day with a sixth place medal. Thayn had a win by first period fall in the consolation round. Oakley Adams finished in sixth place and Shane Lewis finished in seventh, winning his placement match by major decision 20-11.

At the end of the day, Logan Draper had the fastest fall of the tournament with a ten-second pin. Olson got the fastest tech fall with 3:51 seconds to the 15 point win. Zach Cecil was sixth for most pins in the least time with three falls in 7:06.

This weekend the Buckaroos will finish their season at the 2A State Tournament at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Wrestling begins at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
