Adam Bunker wins event, earns honor at multi-state track meet

Adam Bunker officially wrapped up his Monticello High School track and field career in impressive fashion June 6-8 when he won the 2000-meter steeple chase at the Great Southwest Classic Track and Field Meet at the University of New Mexico.
Bunker’s first place finish of 6:21.75 earned him the Pat Porter Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Distance Runner, awarded by meet officials.
Top athletes from 20 southwestern states competed at the annual invitational meet. Bunker, who also finished eighth in the high jump and 12th in the 3200, helped Team Utah to a third place finish overall behind Missouri and Texas.
Bunker was the only San Juan County athlete and the only athlete representing the Utah 1A ranks at the meet.
“It was super exciting,” he said. “It was surreal to be invited to such a large event. I was even more excited that Team Utah did so well. We dominated the distance events.”
Bunker was ranked as high as ninth nationally this season in the 2K steeple chase. He finishes his high school running career with nine individual state championships and four team state titles.
“I love Monticello and was really proud to represent Monticello at all these track events,” Bunker concluded. He has signed to run cross country and track with Utah Valley University.
