Whitehorse and Mon. Valley set for state

When the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) released their final 1A Basketball Rating Percentage Index (RPI) rankings on Tuesday, February 18, the Whitehorse and Monument Valley basketball teams learned their postseason fates – at least for their opening games.

Only the Monument Valley boys will play this week. With their 5-13 overall record they finished in the 13th spot in the RPI.

The Cougars will host the Diamond Ranch Diamondbacks Saturday, February 22 at 7 p.m. A win would propel them to the state quarterfinals for just the third time in the last 10 years.

The Whitehorse girls demolished Pinnacle 78-38 in their final game of the regular season on February 13 to finish with an impressive 15-4 overall record.

They sit right where they’ve been for many weeks – in the number two spot in the 1A girls RPI rankings behind the Rich Lady Rebels.

The Lady Raiders earned a first-round bye and will play either Manila or Intermountain Christian at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26 in the state quarterfinals at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

Likewise, the Monument Valley girls are in familiar territory in the final 1A RPI standings, right behind Whitehorse in the third seed with a 17-5 record.

They also enjoy a first-round bye and await a matchup between Pinnacle and West Ridge Academy this weekend to learn who they will play in the quarterfinals next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

And the Whitehorse boys handled Pinnacle 75-60 on February 13 to close out their regular season with a 10-10 record in 10th place in the RPI.

They and their quarterfinal opponent, #7 Piute both have first-round byes, and they’ll meet at Richfield High School at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 26.
