Raiders 7th, Cougars 9th at wrestling
Marquez Hathale, a 182-pound wrestler from Whitehorse High School, made it to the championship match before claiming second place at the 1A state wrestling tournament on February 10.
Hathale had a thrilling win in the semifinal, falling behind early before coming back to pin his opponent from Wayne High School. He lost to Justin Cecil of Monticello in the final, 18-6.
Teammate Ronnie Chico overcame a devastating first round loss to record three pins on the way to a third-place finish at 120 pounds. In his final match, Chico pinned the opponent who defeated him in round one.
Colin Benally and Rex Harvey won one match at the tournament. Mikel Benn and Chadman Carter also wrestled.
The Monument Valley Cougars were led by third-place finishes by Tanner Tsinigine at 138 pounds and Cleve Atene at 170 pounds. They both had three wins by pin for the tournament. Roderick Cly also wrestled for the Cougars.
The Raiders scored 39 points to finish seventh, while the Cougars scored 32 points to finish ninth.
