San Juan 2-2 on the week, advances to State tourney

A pair of games with the Grand County Red Devils on Tuesday, April 30 signaled the end of San Juan High School’s 2019 Region 15 baseball schedule.
A pair of wins in the doubleheader and the Broncos would have finished fourth in the region.
But that wasn’t in the cards. San Juan blasted Grand 15-1 in the early game only to lose a close one in the nightcap 6-4.
By splitting the two games, the Broncos finished fifth in Region 15, which set up an opening round 3A State Tournament matchup with the Region 13 second place Judge Memorial Bulldogs.
San Juan opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
They added three more in the top of the second before the Red Devils got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, trimming the Broncos’ lead to 5-1.
The steady performance at the plate continued for the Broncos in the third. They scored one to make it three innings in a row with at least one run, building their lead to 6-1.
The fireworks really went off in the top of the fourth inning for San Juan as they pushed nine runs across the plate to extend their lead to 15-1.
Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the game and the Broncos cruised to the win.
Trez Perkins led the way for San Juan on offense, finishing two for two with a single and a double. Corbin Palmer, Kash Shumway, Tanner Johnson, and Randall Flavel each had one hit, and Palmer and Shumway led the way with two RBIs each.
Palmer went the distance from the mound to get the win for San Juan. The senior lefty gave up just two hits while walking five and striking out 11 in five innings of work.
The back end of the doubleheader didn’t go quite as well for the Broncos. They trailed for the entire game, despite out-hitting the Red Devils 14-6.
Grand took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and increased that led to 3-0 in the top of the third. San Juan scored their first run in the bottom of the third to trim the Red Devil lead to two runs, 3-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning by both teams, Grand scored two in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth, enlarging their lead to 6-1.
Still down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos made a valiant effort to pick up the victory. Their three-run rally fell just short and resulted in a 6-4 loss.
Five Broncos finished the game with multiple hits including Palmer and Johnson who led the way with three apiece. Perkins, Elijah Lee, and Maddax Lee each logged two hits while Flavel and Isaiah Hannigan both had one hit in the game.
Perkins started the game pitching for San Juan and put in three and two thirds innings, striking out seven, walking two, and giving up three hits along the way.
Davis Mendoza handled relief duties, putting in three and a third innings of work, walking one, and giving up three hits in the loss.
Splitting the games with Grand left San Juan in fifth place in Region 15 and set up an opening round matchup with Judge Memorial to start the 3A State Tournament on Saturday, May 4 in Manti, UT.
The Broncos scored first with a solo run in the top of the third inning. Then in the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs returned the favor, knotting things up at 1-1.
A scoreless fifth inning gave way to a five-run sixth for San Juan, pushing their lead to 6-1.
Those five runs came courtesy of a solo homerun by Johnson and a grand slam by Palmer.
Judge scored one run in the sixth and one in the seventh, but San Juan held on for the 6-3 win and advanced to the second round.
Mendoza, Flavel, Palmer, and Maddax Lee all had multiple hits in the game, each finishing with two hits apiece. Shumway, Johnson, Hannigan, and Shaw Nielson all finished with one hit for San Juan. Palmer led the way in RBIs, tallying three in the game.
Pitching duties fell to Palmer and Mendoza with Palmer getting the start and going five and two thirds innings where he surrendered just two hits while collecting eight strikeouts and walking eight.
Mendoza was credited with a save after going an inning and third, finishing with one walk and one strikeout while giving up three hits.
The win against Judge advanced San Juan to the next round, played later Saturday afternoon against Manti.
The game remained close throughout, tied at 2-2 after four innings of play.
But the Templars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored two runs to go up 4-2. San Juan got within one in the top of the sixth before the Templars sealed the deal with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to hand the Broncos a 6-3 loss.
It was the second time in the week the Broncos out-hit their opponent only to lose. They bested the Templars 9-7 in that category.
Maddax Lee and Mendoza each had two hits in the game to lead San Juan at the plate. Perkins, Palmer, Nielson, Flavel, and Shumway each had one hit in the game. Shumway led the Broncos in RBIs with three.
Perkins went the distance on the hill for San Juan, striking out eight, walking three, and scattering seven hits across six innings.
The Broncos now move to the one loss bracket of the tournament where they will take on another Region 15 team, the South Sevier Rams.
The two squads split a pair of games earlier this season. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 9 at Juan Diego High School in Draper, UT.
