Lady Bronco volleyball battles through tough losses

Since they moved to 5-5 on the year with a win over Monticello on September 3, it’s been tough sledding for the San Juan High School volleyball team. They’ve lost four straight Region 12 matches to drop to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in the region.

This past week they suffered a 1-3 loss to Grand at home Tuesday, September 15 and a 2-3 loss to Emery in Castle Dale on Thursday, September 17.

On Tuesday San Juan fell behind when Grand won the first set 25-18. The Lady Broncos evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-19, but the Lady Red Devils closed San Juan out with 25-20 and 25-13 wins in the third and fourth sets.

Despite the loss, three San Juan players served 100 percent on the night: Kaeahliyah Howard, Sadie Brown, and Halli Palmer. Jerika Torgerson ended the match with a 91.7 service percentage. Palmer was credited with the Lady Broncos’ only ace.

Torgerson got 17 kills against Grand and Kinley Noyes collected 10. Bailey Brown had 19 assists for San Juan and Palmer got 12.

It was a bit of a heartbreaker in Castle Dale on Thursday. San Juan was up two sets to one before suffering the 3-2 loss.

They won the first set 25-21, Emery bounced back for a 25-22 win in set two, then the Lady Broncos turned the tables with a 25-22 third-set win.

But the Lady Spartans topped San Juan 25-17 in the fourth and closed the Lady Broncos out 15-13 in the final set.

San Juan got some good serving in the match. Jerika Torgerson had four aces on the night, Bailey Brown and Sadie Brown got three apiece, and Kaeahliyah Howard and Maycee Conway had one each.

Torgerson led the Lady Broncos with a 94.4 service percentage, Conway served 93.8 percent, and Howard and Sadie Brown both weighed in at 90 percent.

Torgerson collected an impressive 17 kills against Emery, Sadie Brown had 12, Bailey Brown got eight, and Kinley Noyes had six.

Torgerson led the way for San Juan in the block department also with seven on the night. Macy Jacobsen blocked five Lady Spartan hits and Noyes and Sadie Brown both had three.

Bailey Brown was solid for the Lady Broncos with 27 assists, and Halli Palmer had 17 helpers.

Following the losses, San Juan dropped to 16th in the Utah High School Activities Association 3A volleyball RPI.

They had a tough Region 12 matchup at Carbon on Tuesday, September 22. They’ll close out this week at home versus Kanab on Thursday, September 24.
