SJR 10K race is October 11

Get your running (or walking) shoes ready for the second annual Newspapers Rock 10K race at 10 a.m. on October 11.

Sponsored by the San Juan Record, the race winds 6.2 miles through breathtaking Indian Creek Canyon in the height of the fall colors.

A race application is available on page 8 of this issue.

The course is ideal for a 10K race, with a gentle downward slope and constantly turning road. The fall colors of the cottonwood trees should be stunning.

In November, 2007, soon after the inaugural Newspapers Rock race, Runners World magazine highlighted the Indian Creek corridor in their monthly Rave Run feature.

The magazine raved about the run, stating there “is a scenic treat around every corner.”

Race director Scott Burton encourages runners to sign up early to secure a t-shirt, which designer Andrea Montgomery says is sure to be a collector’s item. Editor Bill Boyle is so busy training that he did not have time to be quoted for this article.

In 2007, nearly 30 runners participated in the inaugural race. The overall winner was Matt Larson. Early registration hints that there will be significantly more runners for the second race.
