School district names new superintendent

Dr. Ed Lyman has accepted the position as Superintendent of the San Juan School District. He will replace Dr. Douglas Wright beginning on July 1, 2016. The appointment was announced to school personnel on April 27.
The announcement culminates a two-month effort to replace Dr. Wright. Wright is retiring from the district after more than 14 years as superintendent.
The district received applications for the position from 14 career educators. A group of 20 local educators and community members helped screen the applications. Eventually, interviews were offered to six of the applicants.
Dr. Lyman has been an educator for 30 years, with the bulk of his career at public schools in Texas. He has 15 years of experience as a superintendent at three separate school districts in Texas. The districts he has led range in size from 1,200 students to 22,000 students.
Currently, he is the superintendent of the Westwood Independent School District in Palestine, TX, where he has served since 2007.
Dr. Lyman has extensive experience in multi-cultural education settings and working with turn-around schools. His tenure as a superintendent in Texas has been marked by college/career readiness efforts, improved test scores, enhanced community involvement, and strengthened financial stability.
His experience includes 15 years as a superintendent, five years as a high school principal, two years as an elementary school principal, two years as a junior high assistant principal, and more than five years as a classroom teacher.
A Utah native, Dr. Lyman grew up in Provo as the son of an educator. He is a descendant of Amasa Mason Lyman and is a distant relative to the Lyman families in San Juan County. He is anxious to return to Utah and make his home in San Juan County.
Ed Lyman earned a bachelors degree from Brigham Young University, a masters degree from East Texas State University and a doctorate of education from East West Texas University.
Dr. Lyman married Theresa, a Texan and they raised a family of six children. They also have six grandchildren.
He has been actively involved with the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Economic Development efforts.
The San Juan School District operates 12 schools and serves approximately 3,000 students in a sprawling district that extends from La Sal to Navajo Mountain.
