San Juan students excel at state HOSA event
The Utah State HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competition was held April 3 and 4 in Layton, UT.
The number of state participants from San Juan High School doubled this year and the number of top ten finishers also doubled. This was the first time San Juan had participants in Dental Spelling, Medical Terminology, Nurse Assisting, Prepared Speaking, Career Health Display and HOSA Bowl. The students are willing to try new events and have represented themselves and the school very well.
Jill Black finished in first place in the prepared speaking competition and qualifies for the national HOSA competition. Other local students who placed high in the events include Jessie Parker, who was fifth in prepared speaking; Stuart Grisham, who was fifth in nurse assisting; and Stephanie Atkinson, who was ninth in nurse assisting.
Students in Health Science events include Kara Redd in dental spelling and Conan Benally, Stuart Grisham, Ashlie Hunt, Jennifer Hunt, and Alisha Tate in medical terminology.
Students in Health Professions events include Stephanie Atkinson, Stuart Grisham, Casey Meyer and Haley Parker in nurse assisting.
Students in Leadership events include Conan Benally and Casey Meyer for extemporaneous health posters; Joy Merket in extemporaneous writing; Stephanie Zhonnie in medical photography; and Jill Black and Jessi Palmer in prepared speaking.
Students in Teamwork events include Jodi Black and Maquel Blake in career health display; Stephanie Atkinson, Jill Black, Stuart Grisham, and Jennifer Hunt in HOSA bowl; Brooke Bowring, Joy Merket, Casey Meyer, Haley Parker, Kara Redd, and Alisha Tate in medical reading.
Students from all classifications, 1A through 5A, participated together in the competition. The national competition will be held June 18-21 in Dallas, Texas.
