San Juan Gymkhana
A group of horse enthusiasts recently met at Bryce’s Arena in Blanding to bring to a successful close to the first annual San Juan Gymkhana Series. The series, organized by Shawna Shumway, Kelsey Homedew, and Wendy Benson, began in September. Gymkhana refers to a series of rodeo-style competitions in which riders perform tasks measured against the clock. The series was created to give participants an atmosphere where they could compete without feeling pressure and have fun in the arena. One participant said, “Gymkhana is still fun no matter how fast or slow you go. No matter if you win or lose it’s an adrenaline rush.” Through the thrills, chills, and spills, all participants had a great time, and although Gymkhana competitions are designed for kids, many of the parents seem to enjoy it the most.
