County Treasurer grant makes historical records accessible

The Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board, administered by the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service, has announced San Juan County Treasurer’s Office as a recipient of its Spring/Fall 2026 grant funding to preserve and provide access to Utah’s history. The Treasurer’s Office was awarded $7,200 to digitize county tax records.
The USHRAB’s grant program is funded by a State Board Programming Grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission at the National Archives. The USHRAB assists public and private non-profits organizations, as well as non-Federal government entities throughout the State of Utah in the preservation and use of historical records.
The Treasurer’s Office tax records date from 1897 to present. Currently these records are stored on microfilm. The county’s microfilm reader no longer prints clearly and is difficult to use.
BMI Imaging has contracted to transfer these records to a flash drive, which will make them much easier to access. These records are often used for family history, filing federal taxes and when buying or selling the property. Also, they are requested as documentation to be used in claiming Downwinders compensation.
