Poor grades for many local schools

The State of Utah has released grades for schools, including the local schools in the San Juan School District. The results are additional evidence of the challenge of educating the diverse populations in the local schools.
The grades show that four schools in the district received failing grades, including Montezuma Creek Elementary School, Whitehorse High School, Tse’bii’nidzisgai Elementary School at Monument Valley, and Monument Valley High School.
Approximately five percent of the schools in the state received a failing grade.
Receiving a C grade on the report card are Albert R Lyman Middle School in Blanding, Blanding Elementary School, San Juan High School, Bluff Elementary School, and Monticello Elementary School.
Monticello High School received the highest grade in the district with a B. The B grade placed Monticello High School among the top 20 high schools in the state.
In another report released by the state, the School Federal Accountability Report, Monticello High School is listed as the top public high school in the state and fourth overall.
The past 15 years have been marked by a dramatic increase in the amount of information available to schools, students, and parents. However, there has been an additional movement to simplify the remarkably complex education system into a single grade for each school.
While the single grade is helpful in some ways, school officials remind local residents that there is a mind-boggling amount of additional information on each school, each grade level, and ultimately, each student.
