Otto Vermont (Buck) Brandt

August 28, 1931 ~ January 16, 2009

Otto Vermont (Buck) Brandt age 77 of Waterflow, NM went home to be with our Lord at his home on January 16, 2009, after a long courageous battle with emphysema.

Buck, known to all by his family and friends, was born August 28, 1931 in York Town, TX to Otto G. and Henrietta Brandt.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta, sons James and wife Christina, of Monticello, Anthony and wife Linda of Monticello, daughter Debra Brandt of Farmington, son Jeffery and wife Wendy of Monticello, son William and wife Jeanne Brandt of Monticello, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother Andrew Hodge of Cuero, TX, stepson Obie and wife Carol Hilgenfeld of Moab, UT, stepdaughter Shauna O’Leary of Farmington and 3 step grandchildren.

Buck is preceded in death by his parents, wife and mother of his children, Wanda Lee Slavin Brandt, brother Charles Brandt and granddaughters Laura Lee and Tasha Lynn Brandt.

Buck graduated from high school in 1949 in Cuero, TX. He worked at a five and 10-cent store and a filing station until he went in the Army in 1952. He served two years in Korea and left the Army as a decorated corporal.

He stayed in the Army Reserve until September 1960 after returning to the US from Korea he went to work on a drilling rig and ended up in Utah, where he met and married Lee.

He went to work in the uranium mines in Utah and Arizona until it was time for the oldest son to start school in 1963. Then Buck made his home in Monticello, where he would spend all but the last six years of his life.

Buck had many jobs but loved farming the most. He retired from the Utah state Road Deptartment in 1993 and enjoyed doing farming jobs for friends and neighbors. He spent some time at the Dugout Ranch in Canyonlands farming and herding cattle.

He had a unique sense of humor and loved to tease his grandkids. He made their greatest challenge trying to beat him at dominoes.

He relocated to New Mexico with milder weather and lower altitudes, for health reasons in 2002.

He loved southern Utah and will be laid to rest next to his first wife Lee, in Lockerby Cemetery, Eastland Monticello, UT.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him Rest in peace Dad.
